The epigenetic control of gene expression is increasingly recognized as a vital regulatory layer defining cell function and identity. The term 'epigenetics' was originally used to define the poorly understood processes by which a fertilized zygote develops into a mature, complex organism. Over the years, with the understanding that all cells of an organism carry the same DNA and with increased knowledge of regulation of transcription, researchers looked for heritable changes in gene expression that do not involve changes in genomic sequence and discovered chemical modifications of DNA and histones. Given the widespread acceptance of importance of epigenetic mechanisms in both development and disease this decade, it is a desirable time to revisit some crucial discoveries that have helped build our concepts in the field and laid future milestones. Through our workshop, we will provide participants with an introduction to the key discoveries and fundamental concepts in epigenetics as well as future outlook, at the same time offer young scientists the possibility of interacting with pioneers in the field.
