Two Northwestern University faculty members, David Cugell and Christina Enroth-Cugell, donated a portion of their estate to the university that they loved and spent most of their lives at. The pair are known for their dedication to the students and for their inspiring work in the sciences.

David spent 58 years with the University, the majority of which was spent with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Feinburg School of Medicine. He remains the University’s longest-serving faculty member. David’s wife, Christina, was one of the first female professors to teach at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and served as a faculty member for 31 years.

The $9.39 million gift received from the Cugell’s will support departments and projects at the University in which the they dedicated their careers to. Distribution of this donation includes, but is not limited to, financially supporting Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral fellows and post-M.D. candidates as well as funding specific projects such as lung disease research, visual neuroscience, and biomedical engineering research.

These funds are part of the ‘We Will.’ campaign, a funding effort to continue striving for excellence and transforming the University into one of the top research academies in the nation. The University has already gained much momentum and is supported by at least 3,000 faculty and more than 6,000 staff, who the president describes as “the DNA of the University.”

Funding for the University has increased steadily over the years, reliably landing the research university a spot in the top 15 institutions. The president of the University, Morton Schapiro, has hopes that the new Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center will push Northwestern into the $1 billion category of funding in the upcoming years while benefitting the world with life-changing innovations. The new building will add approximately 2,000 new jobs to the faculty pool, specifically in the field of biomedical research.

One thing is clear: Northwestern University’s research departments are expanding and are supported, financially and otherwise, by their valued and respected faculty. This is the perfect environment for laboratory equipment and innovative research suppliers to contribute to the goals of this institution. If you sell laboratory supplies, consider taking your products to Evanston, Illinois for BioTechnology Calendar, Inc.’s annual BioResearch Product FaireTM event at Northwestern University. The connections you will make at this university can benefit the world for years to come.
