Longwood Medical Area in Boston is one of the densest medical communities in the country. The 213-acre neighborhood houses four teaching hospitals, a medical school, and a diabetes research center and clinic. Five of those institutions — Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Joslin Diabetes Center are affiliated with Harvard Medical School, which relies on them to train its students. In September 2017, Boston Children’s Hospital began construction of a $1 billion state-of-the-art clinical building.

The new medical building will be 11-stories and 565,000 square feet. It will increase the hospital’s bed capacity from 401 to 472 beds. The additional space also allows for the expansion of Children’s Hospital’s cardiovascular program into a comprehensive and integrated five-floor Heart Center. Another highlight of the project is the establishment of a 30 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with individual patient rooms.
When completed, the facility will also boast three acres of surgical space. This includes 10 new operating rooms, which will be contiguous to 12 renovated operating rooms. These rooms will incorporate sophisticated technologies for advanced, minimally invasive procedures.
The entire building will utilize the most up to date, specialized technologies to care for the Hospital’s most complex pediatric patients. It is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2021.
Currently, Boston Children’s Hospital’s often operates with an occupancy rate near capacity. This new construction is one of several projects designed to increase the Hospital’s capacity as well as its ability to better serve their growing number of complex pediatric patients. These projects, collectively known as Transforming Tomorrow, are aimed at modernizing the facilities in order to meet today’s needs.
The goals of the Transforming Tomorrow effort are to:
Work has also begun on a clinic less than a mile from Longwood that will enable Boston Children’s Hospital to provide ambulatory-clinic care. Boston Children’s at Brookline Place will offer more tightly integrated programs and services, such as the Neurodevelopmental and Neuropsychiatric Center, the Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center, Ophthalmology and Dentistry. Construction on this 182,500-square-foot, eight-story building that includes medical offices and ambulatory care began in early 2017 and is expected to be completed around the end of 2019.
