Lab suppliers marketing university lab equipment and hoping to increase scientific product sales may want to take a closer look at Stony Brook University’s latest research funding grants. Stony Brook University was recently awarded $2.45 million from the New York state government to fund programs are that have been designated as having “high need.” The government will be awarding $12 million to 36 SUNY colleges over the next three years.

"This funding will help establish new programs and augment existing programs at Stony Brook University to educate and train students so they are prepared to launch into a viable, prosperous career right here in New York," said Stony Brook University President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley.

A list published by the Three Village Patch highlights what departments are receiving research funding and how much each department is receiving:

Stony Brook University Programs Receiving Funding

  • Advanced Manufacturing Design ($118,500)
  • Civil Engineering ($309,984)
  • Electrical Engineering [also with Binghamton University and University at Buffalo ($615,000]
  • Computer Systems ($331,000)
  • Clinical Laboratory Science ($555,453)
  • Physical Therapy ($168,000)
  • Nursing ($255,000)
  • Quantitative Biology ($94,000)

The state government chose high-need areas based on their number of job openings and room for growth. Some of these areas include information technology, renewable energy, medical and clinical laboratory technicians, skilled biomedical and biological technicians, and chemical technicians.

In addition to receiving research funding from the state government, Stony Brook University also receives a great deal of NIH and NSF funding that makes the university an attractive market for lab suppliers hoping to increase scientific product sales and market university lab equipment. In 2012, the NIH gave Stony Brook University $59.3 million in research funding. For the convenience of our readers, we have compiled a list of the top-funded life science departments receiving NIH funding, organized by department name, number of awards received and total research funding awarded. For a full list of departments receiving funding, please visit the NIH website.

2012 NIH Research Funding at Stony Brook University

  • Anesthesiology – 1 award, $399,698
  • Biochemistry – 15 awards, $4.8 million
  • Biology – 1 award, $298,533
  • Biomedical Engineering – 12 awards, $5.8 million
  • Biostatistics and Other Math Sciences – 4 awards, $894,516
  • Chemistry – 10 awards, $2.4 million
  • Internal Medicine – 17 awards, $5.2 million
  • Pharmacology – 16 awards, $4.2 million

Stony Brook University also received $22.1 million from the NSF in 2012. The research funding was spread out over a number of disciplines. Life science projects receiving funding included topics such as phenomics, biomolecular interactions, molecular mechanisms of lignin precursor transportation, demographic heterogeneity of an emergent invasive species in New York, molecular biophysics, the folding processes of helical proteins, cellular and molecular pathways for host-pathogen interactions, phylogeny and rates of evolution in hyperdiverse mammalian radiation and evolutionary potential in response to climate change.
