When taking into account a new grant to Oregon Health and Science University and recent NIH and NSF research funding, Oregon Health and Science University is a great market for lab suppliers marketing life science solutions and hoping to generate laboratory sales leads. Oregon Health and Science University was recently awarded $50 thousand in research funding by the National Psoriasis Foundation.

The grant was awarded to Cong-Qiu Chu, M.D., Ph.D., who is studying small interfering RNA, a new type of therapeutic agents that target an important cell in psoriasis lesions and can be applied to the body’s surface. Chu received the A. Marilyn Sime Discovery Grant and hopes to discover a new topical treatment for psoriasis.

According to The Sacramento Bee, the National Psoriasis Foundation is the largest nonprofit psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis organization in the world. The organization’s goal is to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and resolve the problems psoriatic diseases create through research, advocacy and education.

"National Psoriasis Foundation is dedicated to increasing the number of scientists, dollars and projects dedicated to psoriatic diseases," said National Psoriasis Foundation president and CEO Randy Beranek. "We are the only organization funding these types of promising research projects, each of which will move us faster toward finding a cure, which is our highest priority."

Five other universities received research funding from the National Psoriasis Foundation. Researchers and the universities they work with include Dr. Theoharis Theoharides from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Onur Boyman from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, Dr. Dafna Gladman from the University of Toronto, Dr. Matthew Hayden from Columbia University and Nicole Ward, PhD, from Case Western Reserve University.

In addition to receiving a $50 thousand grant from the National Psoriasis Foundation, Oregon Health and Science University also receives a great deal of research funding from the NIH and NSF. In 2012, the NIH gave Oregon Health and Science University $194.2 million in research funding. The NIH also ranked the school 29th in the country for direct plus indirect costs in the life sciences, excluding R&D contracts and ARRA awards, in the life sciences in 2011. The total costs were $188.5 million.

In 2012, the NSF gave Oregon Health and Science University $6.5 million in research funding, and they ranked the school 41st for total R&D expenditures in life sciences in 2010. The total expenditures that year were $281.8 million.

If you are a lab supplier interesting in marketing life science solutions and increasing laboratory sales leads at Oregon Health and Science University, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites you to attend our annual Portland BioResearch Product Faire™ Event on September 12, 2013. Last year, the Portland BioResearch Product Faire™ Event attracted 170 attendees. Of those people who came, 46 were purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 24 were lab managers. The visitors came from 19 different research buildings and 37 departments around the school.
