University of Michigan at Ann Arbor: $536.6M in Research Funding

Written by Jennifer Nieuwkerk | Fri, Feb 01, 2013

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is one of the most richly funded markets in the country for biotechnology vendors and lab suppliers, as recent NIH and NSF research funding statistics show. In 2012, the NIH gave the University of Michigan $456.3 million in research funding. The money has been awarded to various departments for research projects including:

  • Anatomy/Cell Biology -- $7 million
  • Biochemistry --$12 million
  • Biology -- $6.5 million
  • Biomedical Engineering -- $4.4 million
  • Biophysics -- $1.1 million
  • Biostatistics -- $22 million
  • Microbiology --$13.1 million

In addition to the large sum of research funding the NIH awarded the University of Michigan, the university has also received money from the NSF. In 2012, the NSF gave the University of Michigan $80.3 million in research funding. Of that money, $6.8 million has gone to bio-related projects alone. The bio projects receiving research funding span a number of programs, including systematics and biodiversity science, bioinformatics, systems and synthetic biology, molecular biophysics, behavioral systems, genetic mechanisms, neural systems, developmental systems, ecosystem science, evolutionary processes and global systems science. We have compiled a list of the top five NSF-funded bio projects broken down by funding program, project title and award money below.

Top Five NSF-Funded Bio Projects

  • Systematics and Biodiversity Science: Automated and community-driven synthesis of the tree of life -- $900,000
  • Cross- EF Activities: The Macrofungi Collection Consortium: Unlocking a Biodiversity Resource for Understanding Biotic Interactions, Nutrient Cycling and Human Affairs -- $455,210
  • Advances in Bioscience: Real-Time Large-Scale Parallel Intelligent C02 Data Assimilation System -- $350,000
  • Physiology and Structural Systems: Structure and Mechanics of the Bat Wing Membrane in Evolutionary Perspective -- $299,999
  • Systems and Synthetic Biology: Interpreting Hedgehog Signaling Gradients With Cis-Regulatory DNA: A Quantitative In Vivo/Computational Approach -- $283,879
