BioResearch Funding and Life Science Market Opportunities in Hawaii

Written by BCI Staff | Mon, Nov 28, 2011

The University of Hawaii (UH) System includes 10 campuses across the Hawaiian Islands.  The flagship campus is at Manoa, in a residential valley above Waikiki Beach, just outside the capital city of Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

Researchers at UH-Manoa currently receive over $75.5 Million in NIH funding for active life science and medical research studies, which includes work done at UH’s prestigious Burns School of Medicine. Over 75% of that NIH research funding was awarded in FY 2011 alone; the remainder constitutes continuing grants from previous fiscal years. Two of UHM's strongest bioscience areas are cancer and genetics.

NSF awards to UHM for FY 2011 total more than $36.8 Million, with grants going to fund research entities like the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC) at the University, as well as strong programs in oceanography and astronomy.

The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) at UH-Manoa is the only medical school in Hawaii and the most ethnically diverse medical school in the world.  Of the more than 1500 applicants each year, administrators accept fewer than 70 for the incoming first-year class. Established in 1965, JABSOM later became a 4-year program and most recently, in 2005, moved to its ultra-modern campus in the in the Kaka‘ako waterfront district of Honolulu, about 4 miles from the main Manoa campus and a block or so from the UH Cancer Center under construction (see below).

Key departments for laboratory research at JABSOM include:

  • Biochemistry
  • Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Medical Technology
  • Pathology
  • Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology

The UH Cancer Center is another research organization affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, with facilities located in downtown Honolulu and Kaka‘ako. Currently, the Center is conducting more than 100 cancer research projects in four interdisciplinary programs: Cancer Biology, Cancer Prevention and Control, Epidemiology, and Clinical and Translational Research.

Now being built is the new UH Cancer Center facility at Kaka’ako:

About the new cancer research building:

  • scheduled to open in early 2013
  • funded by state cigarette tax
  • 150,000 square-foot Center
  • just received an additional $3M gift from a local philanthropist
