Biomedical Research Facilities News at UCSD: Stem Cell and Genomics Buildings

Written by BCI Staff | Wed, Oct 26, 2011

Following up on our much-read April 2011 blog on Biomedical Building News at UCSD, we are pleased to report that the following UCSD medical facilities have celebrated their grand openings:

The next major biomedical research facility scheduled to open in 2011, on November 29, is the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) Building on the North Campus, in the Torrey Pines Mesa research cluster.

The SCRM is a non-profit corporation formed by UCSD, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and The Scripps Research Institute, as well as being part of the CIRM stem cell research network.  The new Sanford building will provide 135,000 gsf of research laboratories and related office space and will house core facilities including:

  • robotics
  • disease modeling
  • imaging
  • protein and nucleic acid facilities

Another UCSD biomedical building milestone involves the J. Craig Venter Institute for genomics research (above), which broke ground on its ultra-sustainable La Jolla research facility in September.  The 45,000sf facility will contain 12,247sf of wet lab and computational lab space for the 125 scientists and their staff, who are engaged in some of the most exciting areas of genomic research, including:

  • Human genomic sequencing and analysis
  • Synthetic genomics
  • Environmental genomics

The new Venter Institute building is already under construction in the UCSD Scripps Upper Mesa Neighborhood (see an excellent map of all UCSD campus construction here) and is due for completion in 2013.  When it is up and running, it will be one of the first, if not the first, true net-zero energy biological research laboratories in the world, generating 100% of its power on-site (through the use of solar panels). Underground parking and green roof gardens, as well as super-efficient systems and its solar power generation, will qualify the building for Platinum+ LEED certification.  Moreover, the facility aims not to dominate the landscape but to fit in with it and its current uses, as evidenced in this note from the building fact sheet:

“The property on which the new JCVI building is being built will continue to feature a dog walking trail currently enjoyed by many residents of the area.”

If you are a life science researcher, purchasing agent, lab manager, or other biotech scientist in the San Diego area, Biotechnology Calendar Inc. invites you to meet and network with top-tier laboratory equipment supply and service professionals at our next San Diego Biotechnology Vendor Showcase exposition being held on February 9, 2012.  This event, now going into its 19th year, is held twice-annually on the UCSD campus and includes seminars, catered buffet lunch, and excellent opportunities to explore and discuss the latest in laboratory technologies.  See our complete 2012 nationwide calendar here.
