University Research in Texas: New Autoimmune Disease Center

The Texas Medical Center in Houston recently welcomed a new center to combat Immune Disorders.  The Frank C. Arnett, M.D. Center for Autoimmunity and Immunology is named after the retired UT Medical School researcher who studied autoimmune diseases.  University research conducted here will attempt to isolate and identify the genes associated autoimmune disorders.

This new state-of-the art facility boasts 4,000 square feet of research laboratory space.  Including areas with specialized clinics that focus on specific disorders.  With over 23 million Americans suffering from autoimmune diseases, researchers at the center are seeking treatments and cures in the following areas:  

-       Rheumatoid arthritis

-       Type 1 diabetes

-       Scleroderma

-       Ankylosing spondylitis

-       Crohn’s disease

-       Psoriasis

-       Lupus

-       Vasculitis

-       Scleroderma

 

Dr. Frank Arnett, who the center was named after, won the President’s Scholar Award for Teaching at UT Health Science CenterHe recently retired as professor.  Dr. Maureen Mayes is also a major contributor for collaborative efforts with Dr. Frank Arnett that helped identify genes that are associated with Scleroderma.  Dr. John Reveille is currently the director of the center
