Such growth and development can largely be attributed to President John S. Toll, who championed numerous university research programs and building developments at Stony Brook.  Under his supervision, university enrollment went from 1,800 to 17,000 students.  The following nine facts highlight what has made Stony Brook University one of the leading research universities in the nation.

1. The American Association of Universities placed Stony Brook University among the top 63 research universities in the nation.

2. Stony Brook University professors have received numerous awards, including three Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal, five National Medals of Science, and two National Medals of Technology and Innovation.

3. Stony Brook University is in the process of renovating a 43,000 square foot building in the in the Research and Development Park.  The campus will eventually contain ten buildings with space dedicated to laboratory research.

4. Stony Brook has a $4.65 billion economic impact on the area, and 14,000 part and full-time jobs.

5. Stony Brook is one of the few universities in the nation to run a federal laboratory.  Other universities with this distinction include University of Chicago, UC Berkeley, MIT, Cornell University, and Princeton University.

6. Notable research discoveries include:

  • An ultrasound method that speeds the healing of bone fractures- nourishes bone cell and quickens the healing process.
  • The link between emphysema and smoking.
  • The first MRI image of a living organism, created by Dr. Raymond Damadian.

If you are a life science researcher or laboratory supplier in the New York area, plan on attending the next Biotechnology Calendar, Inc.  BioResearch Product Faire™ Exposition. This life science laboratory product show and research networking event is held on the Stony Brook campus.  The event is an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with life science and medical science researchers and to learn about up-to-date laboratory products, science supplies and analytical equipment.  This New York Research community event will next be held on October 20, 2011.
