In 2008, Professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at UCSF, Keith Yamamoto, was asked to participate in a scientific consortium to present a report to Congress.  The topic of that report was The New Biology, and it was sponsored by NSF, NIH, and the DOE.  The consortium was known formally as the Committee on A New Biology for the 21st Century: Ensuring the United States leads the Coming Biology Revolution.  The report was presented to Congress in August, 2009 and is an extraordinarily forward-thinking plan to meet the challenges of supporting the planet in the 21st Century by applying scientific insights. Now Keith Yamamoto has been named UCSF's Vice Chancellor for Research and is currently tasked with steering the University's biomedical science research into this "new era of discovery."  He highlights the key elements required for succeeding in the new biological world at UCSF, including:

  • expanding multi-disciplinary research programs
  • increasing alliances with industry, government agencies, and community organizations
  • improving collaboration among the 4 UCSF schools

He says of the position at UCSF: "Opportunities in the biomedical sciences have lit up for us...We are in a position to truly understand the way complicated biological processes work...in such fields as cancer, cardiovascular and neurosciences."

Dr. Yamamoto has been an active member of the faculty of UCSF since 1976.
