UCSD receives more funding; total funding tops $1Billion for 2011.

NFL Charities announced that it will award  $99,700 to a research team at UCSD School of Medicine as part of a $1.6 million budgeted towards funding 16 sports-related medical research  organizations.

UCSD was selected because of its focus on research in advanced detection of human brain injuries, which is important to sports medicine.

The UCSD research will be led by Mingxiong Huang, PhD, professor and associate director of the MEG Radiology Imaging Laboratory at  UCSD Department of Radiology.

Advanced techniques including Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) for detecting neuronal injuries will be used as part of this research program.

Currently UCSD is among one of the most highly-funded research institutions in the nation.  This year the university surpassed its own record by raising over $1 Billion in research funding.  This includes a $160 million allotment from the federal stimulus program as well as a $37.2 million grant from the NIH to help fund the Clinical and Transitional Research Institute.

Coming on February 10th the  30th Semi-Annual Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ Event will be held at UCSD. This exposition will provide opportunities for viewing the newest laboratory technologies available to life science researchers as well as networking and educational opportunities.
