New Research Building Opens With OHSU Life Science Funding

Oregon Health and Science University along with two other public Oregon schools recently opened a new life sciences building, the state’s largest academic building, on Portland’s South Waterfront. The project received $110 million in life science funding from taxpayers, $92 million in funding from Oregon Health and Science University institutional funding, $83 million from OHSU philanthropy and $10 million from the TriMet regional mass transit agency. The riverfront property for the new research building was donated by the Schnitzer family to help OHSU increase its campus presence in Portland.

“The $295 million Collaborative Life Sciences Building provides Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University and Oregon State University nearly 500,000 square feet of lecture halls, classrooms, labs, specialty research centers and offices,” says an article published through the Associated Press. “It will also house the OHSU School of Dentistry. OHSU officials said the 12-story building will allow them to boost the medical school class from 120 students to 160 and the dental school class from 75 students to 90 students.”

Oregon Health and Science University is a well-funded research institution with many research buildings on its campus in addition to the new life sciences building along Portland’s waterfront. Among OHSU’s numerous research centers and institutes are the Center for Embyonic Cell and Gene Therapy, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, the Layton Aging & Alzheimer's Disease Center, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and the Parkinson Center of Oregon and Movement Disorders Program.

The new life sciences building at Oregon Health and Science University is not the only project that has received life science funding at OHSU. Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health awarded university researchers $7.2 million for the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute. The NIH Project Information page provides more information on specific goals for the use of the life science funding:

“OCTRI will utilize a series of innovative partnerships to leverage CTSA support, expand its extensive collaborations with communities, and take advantage of a regional consortium of academic institutions working together to enhance translation. As a member of the CTSA Consortium, OCTRI will contribute unique expertise and resources to the combined effort to solve biomedical problems. Oregon Health and Science University and its partner institution Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research have committed strong leadership support and substantial institutional commitment to OCTRI's continued mission.”

Oregon Health and Science University’s new research building and the university’s substantial life science funding make it an attractive market for selling lab equipment. If you are a lab supplier working to market your life science solutions in Oregon, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites you to exhibit at our OHSU life science vendor show. Our Portland BioResearch Product Faire™Event  will take place on September 11th, 2014.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. is a full-service science research marketing and events-planning company that organizes life science vendor shows at top research institutions across the country. We have been helping lab suppliers market lab supplies easily and economically at our life science vendor shows for over 20 years. If you are interested in exhibiting at a life science vendor show closer to home, we encourage you to view our 2014 calendar of events.
