The University of California, San Diego recently received $5.3 million in life science funding from the National Institutes of Health for the university’s Clinical and Translational Research Institute. Researchers were given notice of their new life science grant on June 7th, 2014 by the administering organization within the NIH providing the funding, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego went into more detail on the NIH website as to how the life science funding would be used:

“The program goals are to: 1) Provide an academic home for the discipline of clinical and translational science; 2) Establish an integrated educational pipeline to train and support clinical and translational scientists; 3) Develop a robust clinical research infrastructure that replaces silos with integrated research; 4) Enhance bioinformatics capabilities that leverage unique UCSD resources; 5) Develop novel technologies to improve research such as biomarker and imaging; 6) Form a Translational Research Alliance with research institutes and industry; 7) Form a Community Alliance with community physicians and the general public to translate scientific discoveries into best practices, increase research into health care disparities, and involve the general public in biomedical science.”

Discretion as to how the new life science grant will be applied to the program’s research goals remains largely up to the project leader and center director, Dr. Gary Firestein. Dr. Firestein is a Professor of Medicine and Dean as well as Associate Vice Chancellor of Translational Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. His research interests have focused on the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis, and his studies have contributed to the development of very effective treatment approaches to rheumatoid arthritis.

This new life science grant at the University of California, San Diego is part of a much larger wellspring of life science funding available at the university. The University of California, San Diego received $1 billion in research funding in 2012-2013. In 2013, the National Institutes of Health gave the University of California, San Diego $362 million in research funding. Over the past five years, the university has also raised $4.9 billion in research funding. On average, UCSD obtains $82 million in new grants per month.

Lab suppliers looking to market lab products in a convenient, economical way in California may be interested in learning more about these new life science grants at the University of California, San Diego at Biotechnology Calendar, Inc.’s UCSD life science vendor show. On August 28th, 2014, we will host our Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ Event at the University of California, San Diego.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. is a full-service science research marketing and events-planning company that organizes life science vendor shows at powerhouse research universities where scientists receive a wealth of life science research funding.
