Stony Brook University recently named an endowed professor for cancer research at an Investiture Ceremony this spring. Dr. Yusuf A. Hannun will have a sizeable amount of science research funding available for conducting cancer research as the Joel Strum Kenny Professor in Cancer Research. Dr. Hannun is a research lab scientist well-known around the globe for his cancer research and already serves as Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

“Dr. Yusuf Hannun brings a world of experience and insight as the Joel Strum Kenny Professor in Cancer Research,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “He is a renowned physician-scientist whose research focuses on the lipid mediators of cancer cell signaling. His work has profoundly impacted cancer research, as well as research in neurobiology, inflammation and metabolism.”

As a research lab scientist with significant science research funding available to him to conduct cancer studies, expectations are great that Dr. Hannun will contribute meaningful knowledge to the field of cancer research. Dr. Hannun has already contributed to more than 500 scholarly publications with widespread impact, as 110 of his papers have been cited at least 110 times worldwide.

“All of us in the Cancer Center are committed wholly and completely to create medicines of the future that better treat and cure many forms of cancer,” Dr. Hannun said. “We embrace this challenge in a difficult time when the federal government has scaled down funding to support cutting-edge research. How wonderful it is know that our donors have the vision and generosity to make our vital work possible.”

Endowments for research lab scientists are the mark of the scientific impact of an individual at a leading university. Not only do endowed faculty receive science research funding, but a position is an honor and a lasting tribute to the donors who establish the endowment. Dr. Hannun is Stony Brook University’s eighth chosen member of an endowed faculty.

Stony Brook University researchers receive a great deal of science research funding both internally and from external funding organizations. The university allotted $135.8 million towards research in the operating budget in 2013-2014. Stony Brook’s 1,039-acre campus on Long Island's North Shore will be adding a new research building to its ranks thanks to new funding. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. wrote more about the $60 million in new funding that will be used to build a state-of-the-art Innovation and Discovery Center.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. organizes top quality life science vendor shows at Stony Brook University every year. Our BioResearch Product Faire™ Event at Stony Brook University is an easy and economical way to sell lab supplies to research professionals and will take place on October 2nd, 2014. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. has been in the business of organizing life science vendor shows for over 20 years. If you are interested in exhibiting at a life science vendor show closer to home, we encourage you to view our 2014 calendar of events.
