Science Market Update

$10.3M in Science Research Funding Awarded to USC by NIH

Written by Jennifer Nieuwkerk | Tue, Jul 08, 2014

Researchers at the University of Southern California recently received $10.3 million in life science funding to help support the Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The project leader is Dr. Thomas Buchanan of the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, and the funding organization within the National Institutes of Health is the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. The new science research funding will help researchers and doctors improve medical treatment for patients in urban areas.

“Our vision is to improve health of the diverse and underserved population of urban Los Angeles and, in doing so, to gain knowledge that we can share with others to improve health in urban settings and megacities across the globe,” stated researchers on the NIH Project Information page. “In pursuit of that vision, we have established a unique partnership of leading academic, clinical and community health organizations in the urban heart of Los Angeles. We are transforming this partnership into a preeminent clinical and translational science institute focused on better heath for diverse, urban communities.”

In 2013, the National Institutes of Health gave the University of Southern California $184.3 million in science research funding. The University of Southern California has a great deal of its own life science funding as well, having sponsored $535 million in research during FY 2011-2012. What’s more, the University of Southern California received a $50 million gift from retired orthopaedic spinal surgeon Gary K. Michelson to fund the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience. The 190,000-square-foot USC Michelson Center will house state-of-the-art flexible labs as well as other centers for electron microscopy and nanofabrication. The life science funding gift was part of the University of Southern California’s fundraising campaign. Three years after its launch, the Campaign for the University of Southern California fundraising initiative has raised $3 billion, much of which will go towards science research funding.

“Using $3.3M of institutional support, we have already made significant progress in transforming our local environment to a home that highly values clinical and translational research,” stated Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute researchers. “We demonstrate strong ability to generate and support exciting new research, from the bench to our communities. With a CTSA and a pledge of $18.7M of institutional support over five years, we will expand to a fully functional institute that will have a have a major impact to improve urban health and advance the discipline of clinical and translational research.”
