$1.6M in New Research Funding Raised for Cancer Research at UC Irvine

Written by Jennifer Nieuwkerk | Wed, Jul 02, 2014

The University of California, Irvine recently hosted a gala that raised $1.6 million in science research funding for the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of UC Irvine Health. More than 500 people were in attendance at the event, which was held at Disney’s Grand California Hotel and Spa.

The “Healers and Heroes” gala raised $530,000 in the first 15 minutes for an intraoperative radiation therapy device that could make the difference in reducing breast cancer treatment and recovery time for women with breast cancer. This device will make the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center the first cancer center in California to offer the Margin Probe intraoperative assessment tool along with intraoperative radiation therapy to help treat breast cancer patients.

“UC Irvine Health is fortunate to belong to a community that is dedicated to making advanced care for the most challenging and complex medical conditions available to all patients,” said Terry A. Belmont, CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center. “The overwhelming generosity of this year’s gala attendees will go a long way toward changing what it means to be diagnosed with cancer in Orange County.”
