New life science research funding at the University of California, San Diego was recently awarded in the amount of $7.5 million to the Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care. The donor, Pauline Foster, is a community philanthropist who has given a great deal of support to the University of California, San Diego over the years. The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care will encompass three floors at the Jacobs Medical Center and be home to medical staff whose purpose is caring for the complex needs of patients with cancer.

“The impact to California from Pauline’s generous gift will be transformational for San Diego and beyond,” said David Brenner, M.D., vice chancellor for Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at UC San Diego. “Patients will have access to targeted cancer therapies, many that are only available in NCI designated comprehensive cancer centers. For the first time, patients with cancer will receive an integrated, multidisciplinary approach in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility.”

The Jacobs Medical Center is currently under construction with an expected opening date in 2016 and has been supported by a great deal of life science research funding. The 10-story facility will include three clinical care units: The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care, the Hospital for Advanced Surgery and the Hospital for Women and Infants. Thanks to Foster’s generous new life science grant, work is well underway on the University of California, San Diego’s new cancer care unit.

Research lab scientists at the University of California, San Diego receive a wealth of new life science grants that rivals the budgets of the top research universities in the United States. In 2013, the National Institutes of Health gave the University of California, San Diego $362 million in life science research funding. The University of California, San Diego also received $1 billion in research funding in 2012-2013. Over the past five years, the university has obtained $4.9 billion in research funding. Finally, UCSD raises an average of $82 million in new grants per month.

Lab suppliers interested in taking advantage of the large amounts of new life science grants at University of California, San Diego may want to market their life science solutions and increase lab sales at this well-funded school. On August 28th, 2014, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. will host our Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ Event at the University of California, San Diego. Last year, this event drew crowds of over 600 attendees, of which 214 were purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 83 were lab managers.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. is a full-service science research marketing and events-planning company that organizes life science vendor shows at universities where research lab scientists receive a wealth of life science research funding.
