With $350 million NIH funding in 2013, and $45 million in NSF funding, plus private support from foundations and individuals, this is a large and growing market for lab supply companies looking to expand their reach. Duke’s funding compares favorably to that of Harvard University, which had $352 million from NIH funding and $55 million NSF funding respectively.

  2. NIH 2014 Funding: $343,577,100 
  3. Duke Clinical Research Institute is the nation’s largest and oldest academic clinical research organization. The Duke Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy is a campus-wide, interdisciplinary initiative to study the broad challenges of the genomic revolution.
  4. Duke University will receive a $137 million grant for to aid in the discovery of an HIV vaccine and will receive $19 million of this in the first year. The rest of the funding will be disbursed over the next 6 years. 
  5. Duke University won a $25 million grant to lead a multi-partner genomics study to discover the genetic basis of epilepsy.
  6. Duke University received a $10.2 million grant for (Umbilical) Cord Blood Research. In order to translate advances in cell therapy to patient care, specifically in the therapeutic use of umbilical cord blood stem cells. 
  7. Duke University received a $15 million gift to the university's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and will be used to enhance existing and future programs and support research and to spur creation of start-up ventures by faculty, staff, students and alumni.
  8. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Duke University $5.8 million to study induction of protective B-cell responses to HIV-1. 
  9. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Duke University $3.1 million to study biomarker intensified treatment for heart failure.
  10. Duke University faculty was awarded $2.8 million to study changes in gene regulation in response to stress among monkeys.
