The University of Georgia, Athens will receive $44.7 million for the construction of a new UGA building, the Science Learning Center. The 122,500-square-foot facility will add 33 teaching labs to the South campus for the chemistry, biological sciences, plant biology and physics departments.

"This will place the university at the forefront of offering students the very best facilities in science education and will advance the governor's goal of expanding the pipeline for students in the STEM disciplines," said University of Georgia, Athens President Jere W. Morehead.

The new UGA building will be equipped with state-of-the-art, flexible space for undergraduate laboratory teaching in disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Once the new UGA building is completed, the program will receive $10 million in new funding to upgrade the rooms where these courses are now taught and revitalize the space for faculty research.

In addition to the new funding at the University of Georgia, which will allow for the creation of a new Science Learning Center building, the University of Georgia, Athens receives a significant amount of research funding for ongoing studies. In 2013, the National Institutes of Health gave the University of Georgia, Athens $34.6 million in science research funding.

The University of Georgia, Athens also received $7 million in new research funding from the National Institutes of Health to research the processes of glycan formation and how they are involved in disease development, potentially leading the way to new therapeutics.

"We know that glycans are involved in almost every aspect of health and disease, but we need to figure out what controls glycan behavior-the machinery that creates glycans and places them on the surface of cells," said Geert-Jan Boons, the principal investigator for the project at the University of Georgia, Athens.

Research on this subject will be conducted at the University of Georgia, Athens’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center. Founded in 1985, it is one of only three centers across the globe that makes it its mission to gain a better understanding of complex carbohydrates, which affect immunology, cellular communication, organism defense mechanisms, gene expression, growth and development.

The University of Georgia, Athens is definitively a well-funded research marketplace. If you are a lab supplier interested in supplying lab equipment to researchers and decision-makers at the University of Georgia, Athens, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites you to exhibit at our BioResearch Product Faire™ Event at the University of Georgia, Athens on February 26th, 2014. Last year, the BioResearch Product Faire™ Event at the University of Georgia, Athens attracted 148 attendees. Of those who attended, 29 were purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 21 were lab managers. These trade show visitors came from 21 different research buildings and 30 departments on campus.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. is a full-service science research marketing and events-planning company that has been organizing life science marketing events at top research universities across the country for over 20 years.
