Science Market Update

Two New Emory Research Buildings Are Under Construction

Emory University is undergoing a $52 million expansion project on the Sanford S. Atwood Chemistry Center. The new Emory research building expansion is largely funded by profits from an HIV-AIDS drug discovered by researchers in the building. This large amount of funding at Emory University will ensure that the space is bright, beautiful and also functional. Sunlit foyers and communal spaces will characterize the new building.

“It’s really an expression of the collegiality of Emory,” said Todd Polley, a materials scientist and the director of operations for the department. “Discoveries are being made at the interface of different disciplines, so we want to provide the best possible space for that interaction.”

About 40,000 square-feet of existing space will be renovated, while another 70,000 square-feet will be added to the new Emory research building. University planners expect a completion date of early 2015.

“The building project sits right in the middle of Emory’s growing science commons,” says David Lynn, the chair of chemistry. “It was important to all of us that the architecture have an open, welcoming feel. This space is a great opportunity to pull the sciences together.”

Emory University is working to build the new facility according to its environmental standards. The new Emory research building will feature sustainable design and building techniques. Every time a tree is removed for construction, a significant number of trees are planted to maintain the forest canopy, in accordance with Emory’s No Net Loss policy. Funding at Emory University allows the university to be environmentally conscious during construction and after the building is completed in facilities operations.

In addition to the funding at Emory University that will facilitate the construction of the new research building, Emory University receives a great deal of research funding for scientists working on life science studies. In 2013, the National Institutes of Health awarded Emory University $253.2 million in science research funding.

In the summer of 2014, construction will also begin on a new Science Building that will be approximately 55,000 GSF. The Science Building will accommodate researchers and educators in biology, chemistry, geology, physics and astronomy, and it will house new teaching wet labs. This new Emory research building is expected to be complete in the spring of 2016.

Given the significant amount of research funding at Emory University along with two new Emory research buildings, Emory University is an attractive market for lab suppliers working to increase their short-term and long-term laboratory equipment sales in Georgia. If you are a lab supplier interested in marketing your life science solutions at Emory University, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites you to attend our BioResearch Product Faire™ at Emory University on February 27th, 2014.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. is a full-service science research marketing and events-planning company that organizes life science marketing events at top research universities across the country.
