The New Epigenetic Mark: 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine – What is its Function?

Conference - Cambridge, United Kingdom

The importance of DNA methylation has been intensely studied over many years. Recently the dichotomy of cytosine:methyl cytosine was shattered by the discovery of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) in mammalian genomic DNA. Produced by oxidation of 5-methylcytosine by the TET family of enzymes, this “new” epigenetic modification is a major focus of epigenetics research with potential roles in development and differentiation through transcriptional regulation and demethylation.

This Hot Topic Event will address the recent advances in 5-hmC research including the function of 5-hmC in self renewal and cell lineage specification in embryonic stem cells, its tissue specific distribution in differentiated cells and its role in tumourigenesis and the influence of citrate metabolism in regulating 5-hmC levels. Our speaker line up and schedule are planned around a lively and interactive discussion on where we are and the future research directions of this exciting field.
