Drosophila as a Model for Intestinal Homeostasis in Health and Disease

The role of microbes in intestinal disease has become increasingly evident, as supported by multiple epidemiological studies. We use Drosophila melanogaster, as a model to understand the basic principles underlying intestinal homeostasis. In response to both pathogens and microbiota, the gut tissue coordinates immune mechanisms with tissue repair mechanisms to
maintain gut structure and function. The goal of this talk will be to provide insights into the dialogue between microbes and the gut tissue, both in health and disease and to analyze the mechanisms that regulate intestinal stem cell activity in response to microbes.
