EMBO Practical Course: Metagenomics: From the Bench to Data Analysis
Practical Course - Heidelberg, Germany
The research area of Metagenomics is positioned at the intersection of many disciplines. Thus, the aim of this course is to provide an overview of the main aspects involved in metagenomics - from the bench to data analysis. By a balanced approach of lectures and practical session, not only a general background will be provided but also the tools employed in metagenomics as well as its relationship with other disciplines will be elucidated.
The methodological, technical and theoretical wealth arising from such complex and dynamic field as the metagenomic research define its biggest challenges, which are plenty and at many different levels in the work-flow. This course will expose the participants to these challenges at all levels.
The course starts by providing historical milestones and cutting edge aspects of research in metagenomics.
The first day also revolves on networking, as well as "breaking the ice" to help everyone engage in discussions and contribute to the course.
The next two days will be based on molecular laboratory practical’s (students are invited to bring their own (env) samples).
The fourth day will deal with data handling, in particular from next generation sequencing. Quizzes will be used to access the learning output of the participants, and they will be asked (in groups) to apply what they have learned.
Days five and six will touch on several relevant aspects in metagenomics research and data analysis. Trainers will provide short lectures with follow-up hands-on exercise in order to have the participants learning as they do the analysis and play with the data.
The final day of the course will deal with methods and algorithms for analysing metagenomic datasets.
