Biodesert International Conference

Conference - Tunisia

The aim of the conference is to discuss the new advancements in microbiology that can enhance agriculture in arid ecosystems according to a sustainable management. We expect to have a wide international audience including scientists expert in desert biology, agriculture in arid environments, microbiology of the plant-soil ecosystems, symbiosis and microbiology of extremophiles.
Three main topics are planned regarding the diversity and adaptation of microorganisms in desert and extreme environments:

1. Microbial diversity in desert extreme environment:
This topic regards the diversity and adaptation of microorganisms in desert and extreme environments like saline systems that are present in the desert and arid lands in general. During the conference two main subjects will be covered:
- Sand and stone dwelling microorganisms
- Microbial diversity in saline and halo-alkaline ecosystems

2. Insect-Microbe Symbiosis: The topics will cover areas like:
(i) Type of microbial symbionts and nature of the symbiotic relationship;
(ii) Overview of the symbiont diversity in agriculture insect pests and economically useful insects;
(iii) Molecular markers for identifying and exploring biodiversity amongst insect symbionts;
(iv) Emerging symbiont-based strategies for the control of pests and vector bourne diseases.

3. Plant-microbe interactions in desert and arid ecosystems: The topics that will be covered regard mostly the possible use of bacteria as a way to enhance the resistance to the plants in harsh environments like:
(i) Nitrogen fixing microorganisms symbiont of Plants;
(ii) Plant growth promoting bacteria; and to understand the interaction between the plant and its pathogens.
