Symposium - Lisbon, Portugal
Immunologists study the immune system to benefit human health, as a multitude of disorders ranging from cancer to infectious, autoimmune and metabolic diseases have an underlying basis rooted in immunity. Animal models have provided a tremendous amount of fundamental insight into the field of immunology. However, translating this knowledge to the clinic requires additional and direct appreciation of the human immune system.
With a wealth of information from animals and quantum leaps in technological advances, a renewed push for understanding the human immune system on a rapid time line is not only feasible, but also necessary. We are bringing together scientists at the forefront of this endeavor to examine and discuss topics extending from innate and adaptive immunity to immunological understanding of cancer and vaccine using cutting-edge techniques that span genetics to systems approaches. Our aim is to spur the progress of efforts to elucidate human immunity, which will in turn inform improvement in current vaccine design, disease treatments and maintenance of immune health.
