The Mighty Daphnia: Past, Present and Future

Conference - Birmingham, United Kingdom

Daphnia has fascinated naturalists and scientists since the 17th century, and now serves as a genomic model species for interdisciplinary research that includes toxicology, ecology, evolution, physiology, development, functional genomics, bioinformatics, quantitative and population genetics. The global efforts of the Daphnia Genomics Consortium (DGC) resulted in Daphnia’s designation as a model species for biomedical research by the US National Institutes of Health – an accomplishment having lasting effects.

Special attention is given to the de-novo assembly and annotation of the Daphnia magna genome –the newest DGC accomplishment. We also celebrate the BGI-UoB Joint Environment and Health Centre and the Daphnia Stock Centre, which are devoted, in part, to facilitating DGC research for Environmental Genomics.

Organization: EMBO
