Carbon emissions may be at an all time high, but thanks to research currently being conducted at Texas A&M University (TAMU), clearer skies may be in our future.

To this end, Texas A&M chemistry professor Hongcai "Joe" Zhou was one of 16 teams recently granted funding from the United States Department of Energy - National Energy Laboratory for his work on a novel material that absorbs carbon dioxide. Specifically, the “spongelike” material will be used to soak up carbon-dioxide that is emitted from coal-based power plants.

According to a university press release, the three-year, $1.5 million grant, will allow Zhou’s team to continue development on this material, which has a real chance at affecting change on a global level.

In addition to this recent grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, TAMU receives millions of dollars in funding each year from different private and public foundations. For example:

  •       2012 Life Science R & D Expenditures: 59th Ranked = $217,734,000
  •       2013 NIH Funding: 206th Ranked = $14,950,767
  •       Texas A & M University is constructing a new $120 million building as part of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, expected completion in 2016.
  •       TAMU received a two grants, totaling $3.7 million, from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for structure-based discovery of critical vulnerabilities of micobacteria.
  •       The National Cancer Institute granted a $1.3 million award for the study of comparative mechanisms of cancer chemoprevention.

Texas A&M University is a multi-million dollar research market where life science researchers are actively looking for new products and technologies to help further their work.

That is why every year, Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. produces an annual BioResearch Product Faire™ event at TAMU as an opportunity for lab product supply companies to meet with active researchers, and to help them source the best new products.
