Tampa,_Florida_-_panoramio_(12).jpgThe University of South Florida is a leading research institution in Tampa that conducts cutting-edge research into all life science fields and steadily publishes research breakthroughs. The campus is currently in the process of expanding to provide even more space and resources to life scientists. Construction on the new school of medicine campus has begun, and is expected to be completed in 2019.

"When this is complete in 2019, the result will be improved health outcomes through superior education, training, and research," explained Judy Genshaft, president of the USF system. "We are creating a future that will attract and retain the brightest students and physicians, something we're already seeing. USF has become the most selective medical school in the state of Florida, with applications growing 60 percent since this project was first announced in 2014. We actually had over 6,000 applications to our medical school for only 170 slots."

This $153 million project will bring over 2,200 medical students in the school into downtown Tampa closer to the Tampa General Hospital, USF's teaching hospital, where medical students and physicians will have more opportunities to interact. Tampa General Hospital has a leading cardiac surgery program, which researchers and physicians in the Heart Institute will benefit from working closely with. Within the new building their will be new research laboratories, clinical research and care units, an auditorium, offices, and conference spaces.

With millions of dollars in grants and awards coming from both private and public donors each year, the University of South Florida is a leading research institution in the United States. In the 2016 fiscal year, the institution received more than $63.2 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with $28 million of this going to the departments of Medicine and Internal Medicine. Other departments benefiting from this funding include:

  1. Pediatrics - $8.7 million
  2. Physiology - $4.2 million
  3. Biochemistry - $4.2 million

With this funding, researchers at the University of South Florida have the means to purchase many new lab products that will assist in their research and clinical trials. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. produces an annual BioResearch Product FaireTM Event in Tampa that is the premiere opportunity for laboratory suppliers to market to USF life scientists, and allows researchers the chance to find the best products and technologies for their work.

The 3rd Annual BioResearch Product FaireTM Event in Tampa will be held on February 8th, 2018 and is expected to attract over a hundred life scientists. Last year, attendees came from 21 different on-campus buildings and 22 different campus departments.
