Research News: U-Wisconsin Adding Cryo-Electron Microscopy to Imaging Arsenal

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is home to a large collection of imaging equipment and facilities, including the Biochemistry Optical Core (BOC). The BOC provides state-of-the-art instrumentation for light and fluorescence based microscopy, including epifluorescence, confocal, and super-resolution imaging. Now UW-Madison is adding another piece of equipment to their state-of-the-art imaging arsenal: a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) facility.

UWisc: $9.8M in DARPA Research Funding to Develop Device to Accelerate Learning

We live in the information age. Many jobs now require the ability to learn large amounts of information and apply that to novel tasks. In the military this ability is critical. However, mastering a new task, skill or information often takes the right environment, mindset, and sharp focus. It also can require a lot of repetition and time. In some situations, that’s a luxury the military can’t afford. Therefore, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently approved $9.85 million in new research funding to develop a system that will help military personnel quickly master new skills and digest vast quantities of information.

Research at U Wisc-Madison May Make Botox Treatments Safer

Over 6 million cosmetic surgery procedures are done each year using Botox, a form of the botulinum toxin. However, besides reducing wrinkles, botulinum toxins are used to treat over 20 medical conditions. These include severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms, chronic migraines, excessive sweating, leaky or over active bladders, facial spasms, and Cerebral Palsy. Botulinum toxins are also quite deadly. In fact, one gram--the equivalent to ¼ teaspoon of sugar--could kill over a million people.

University of Wisconsin: Progress on Earlier Diagnosis of Alzheimer's

In 2014, the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center received a five-year grant from the NIH totalling $7.5M dollars.  The center was the first of its kind, created in 2009, and has provided a focused place of research on Alzheimer's diagnosis and treatment.  With funding through March of 2019, the center is moving forward, with one recent publication indicating a panel of biomarkers that have been linked with Alzheimer's.

A Total of $400,000 Grants Given to Two UW Researchers

Stem Cells Restore Memory at the University of Wisconsin

For all the excitement there’s been over stem cells in biotechnology (including in our Science Market Update posts- for example  Mayo Clinic Spearheads Regenerative Medicine and California to Spend $32M on Stem Cell Research Biobank), one very exciting application for the technology that has been heretofore unannounced is stem cell transplants in the brain. Here to remedy this fact is the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where it was just recently discovered that stem cells can form nerve cells which can actually increase learning and memory capability.
