New Research Facility Opens at USC Keck School

USC recently opened the USC Stevens Hall for Neuroimaging, the new home for the Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute. The sleek, modern, state-of-the-art research building is located on the southern edge of USC's Health Sciences Campus and will help accelerate research on neurological disorders such as autism and Alzheimer’s Disease.

$10M Gift Benefits Sports Medicine Research at USC

Researchers and clinicians at the newly renamed University of Southern California's Epstein Family Center for Sports Medicine will collaborate with the university’s Athletics Department and the Keck School of Medicine to develop innovative injury prevention strategies to not only keep Trojan student-athletes healthy, but also help predict the risk of injury and reinjury. $10,000,000 recently donated by the Epstein Family Foundation will help USC staff achieve this.

University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine Researchers Given $4 million NIH grant

Two USC stem cell researchers have received a combined $4 million from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Dr. Qi-Long Ying will oversee a $1.32 million grant focusing on how two specific proteins influence whether stem cells self-renew to produce additional stem cells or become more specialized cell types. A $2.82 million grant awarded to Dr. Neil Segil will explore why humans are unable to recover from hearing loss, while birds and reptiles can.

USC Receives $19M for BRAIN Initiative Study

In 2013, president Barack Obama initiated a public-private partnership - the BRAIN Initiative - to provide more funding and opportunities for institutions and organizations to study the human brain. This project is led by the National Institutes of Health and includes a new five-year collaborative project, the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network consortium that is aiming to identify all cells in a mouse brain to create a catalog of these cells.

USC Researchers Use Proteins to Boost Immune System in Fighting HIV

HIV Infected H9 T-CellAccording to the World Health Organization, more than 36.7 million people around the world are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although there is not yet a cure for HIV, some treatments are able to slow the spread of the virus. Researchers around the world study the virus with the hope of one day creating a cure to attack the virus. A team of researchers from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles are taking a different approach to fighting HIV - by creating a treatment that boosts the immune system instead of attacking the virus.

USC Receives $21.7M Research Grant to Study Epilepsy

The Laboratory of Neuro Imaging at the University of Southern California recently received a $21.7 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health to study epilepsy. Epilepsy is currently incurable, and the research team supported by the recent NIH grant will work toward finding a cure and developing treatments to prevent the condition.

USC Receives $3.3M to Improve Treatment of a Common Birth Defect

The $3.3M research grant, given to a team of researchers at the University of Southern California, will support a project that will lead to improved treatment of craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis is a birth defect that occurs in roughly one out of every 2,500 live births and in severe cases can lead to developmental delays, hearing loss, blindness, and even death.
