University of Illinois at Chicago: Reaching for NCI designation by 2021

The University of Illinois Cancer Center, the only public-university based cancer center in Chicago, is pursuing designations from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a branch of the National Institutes of Health. The prestigious designation would mean increased financial support from the NIH, resulting in more opportunities for researchers as well as an economic benefit for the entire community.

University of Illinois Receives $2M for Herpes Virus Research

According to John Hopkins Medicine, 50 to 80 percent of U.S. adults have the oral herpes virus and many don’t know it. Most commonly associated with “cold sores” or “fever blister” the herpes virus can cause other, more serious symptoms as well. These include severe flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded Afsar Naqvi, assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago’s College of Dentistry, a five year, $2 million grant to study this wide spread and yet often misdiagnosed disease.

UIC: New Treatment Option For Type 1 Diabetes Brings Research Funding

The University of Illinois at Chicago received a two-year, $475,000 grant to study a new treatment for type 1 diabetes that might help protect the pancreas. This promising new treatment would involve using two protein molecules to reduce the damage caused by the body’s autoimmune response.  The research led by Dr. Bellur S. Prabhaker, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UIC, could eventually free many diabetes patients from the rigors of daily insulin injections.

Newly Renovated College of Dentistry Research Laboratory Open at UIC

Hundreds of researchers work throughout the university, investigating cutting-edge life science topics. In order to provide state-of-the-art research facilities to these leading life scientists, the College of Dentistry at UIC just renovated laboratory space on the first, fourth and fifth floors of the college.

Illinois Researchers Engineer Artificial Ribosome

Ribosomes, found within cells, are vital to the production of proteins and enzymes. Researchers from the University of Chicago, Illinois and Northwestern University recently created the first ribosome engineered in a lab. This newly engineered ribosome, named Ribo-T, was found to work almost as well as natural ribosomes found within organisms, leading scientists to see potential uses for new drugs and biomaterials.
