This September, life scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles have found that tapping into autophagy may prevent the inevitable: that is, the aging of the human body.

Part of a new $37.5 million life science grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has been made available to researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles. The research funding will be shared with fellow science researchers at the University of Pennsylvania to build and test wireless implantable devices that can detect memory deficits caused by injury and try to restore normal function. The purpose of these devices is to help improve brain function for service members, veterans and others after traumatic brain injury or disease.
A research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles recently received a $5.1 million life science grant for stem cell research from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine. California’s state stem cell agency awarded the new research funding to UCLA’s Dr. John Chute so that he may further his investigations into creating new stem cell therapies in the medical field.
Two UCLA Researchers recently received major multimillion dollar stem cell grants to help bring the benefits of new stem cell research to patients. These grants will fund two groundbreaking clinical trials set to begin in the beginning of 2014.
UCLA researchers have developed an innovative approach to diagnosing cancer. This research has excellent commercial applications and is already in the process of being translated into a novel technology by a Los Angeles start up. The new technique allows researchers to very accurately diagnose cancers by observing the physical characteristics of cells in bodily fluids.
University of California life science researchers at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have recently developed a novel and innovative cancer therapy approach that uses nanotechnology to fight brain cancer. This new technology uses nanotechnology structures called “nanodiamonds” to deliver chemotherapy agents directly to the cancerous areas in brain cancer patients.

You might expect the barrage of brilliant lab-on-a-cell-phone inventions that come out of the Ozcan Nano/Bio Photonics Lab at the University of California Los Angeles to eventually dwindle, or perhaps only leave us moderately impressed after a while, but that's not the case. Less than three weeks into 2013, the Ozcan Research Group published on their development of a new optical microscopy platform which uses liquid nanolenses that self-assemble around tiny objects (in the sub–100-nanometer range), allowing it to detect viruses and nanoparticles. That paper was published online in the journal Nature Photonics and was the subject of a recent UCLA research news release. Also this month, the Royal Society of Chemistry published the paper Cost-effective and Rapid Blood Analysis on a Cell-phone. And the international society for optics and photonics, SPIE, announced a new annual award for 2013: the Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award. One guess who its first recipient is? Not a shabby way to start the new year at all.

In 2002, entertainment mogul David Geffen gave an unrestricted gift of $200M to the University of Calfornia Los Angeles' School of Medicine, which was subsequently named the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) in recognition of his generosity. Now, Mr. Geffen has made a further gift of $100M to establish a medical scholarship fund that will offer full funding to the most qualified and promising medical students, whether they are pursuing the MD degree or the MD/PhD in UCLA's renowned Medical Scientist Training Program. As the aim of the scholarship program is to recruit the best students in the world to DGSOM, both American and international students are eligible. All costs including living expenses and supplies are covered by the award and are offered for all 4 years (or 8 in the combined MD/PhD scientist program).
The University of California system has five biomedical campuses currently: San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Irvine, and Davis/Sacramento. While each campus maintains a certain autonomy, the advantage to being part of a unified, statewide system is especially apparent when it comes to sharing resources such as biospecimens. In research studies that require data from large numbers of human blood or tissue samples, for instance, scientists rely on biobanks: an organized collection of human biological material and associated information stored for one or more research purposes.
