Thomas Jefferson U: NIH Research Funding for Virus Study Leads to Novel Treatment Approach

Thomas Jefferson receives over 40 million in National Institute of Health (NIH) research funding each year. One of the projects supported by the NIH since 2011 has been an investigation into DNA viruses. This study recently yielded new insight into the two states of a viral protein and revealed its function as a DNA-sensor. This finding may serve as a road map for developing anti-viral therapy for pathogenic DNA viruses.

New Research Funding Supports UCSF Study of Drug for Traumatic Brain Injuries

In April of last year, Joan and Sanford I. Weill and the Weill Family Foundation donated $185 million to establish the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. This was the largest single donation in UC San Francisco’s history. It raised the philanthropic commitments made to UCSF neuroscience programs last year to more than $500 million.

Research News: U-Wisconsin Adding Cryo-Electron Microscopy to Imaging Arsenal

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is home to a large collection of imaging equipment and facilities, including the Biochemistry Optical Core (BOC). The BOC provides state-of-the-art instrumentation for light and fluorescence based microscopy, including epifluorescence, confocal, and super-resolution imaging. Now UW-Madison is adding another piece of equipment to their state-of-the-art imaging arsenal: a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) facility.

U of Minnesota: $2.6M in NIH Research Funding Leads to Better 3D Printed Organs

On average, 20 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant, according to the United Network of Organ Sharing. However, scientists at the University of Minnesota envision a day when organ transplants from donors will no longer be necessary. Instead, failing organs will be replaced with ones created by specialized 3D printers. In a giant step toward that goal, researchers have manufactured lifelike artificial organ models using a custom-built 3D printer. These models mimic the exact anatomical structure, mechanical properties, as well as the look and feel of real organs. This research project is supported by two, five-year NIH grants that total over $2.6 million.

Two UCSD Life Science Researchers Awarded $3 Million Breakthrough Prize

UC San Diego life science researchers Don Cleveland and Joanne Chory were awarded 2018 Breakthrough Prize awards in December. Each winner receives $3,000,000, which makes the Breakthrough Prize among science’s largest award. The Breakthrough Prize is intended to highlight scientists who are tackling the biggest questions and toughest challenges in order to improve lives.

Dr. Cleveland, distinguished professor of cellular and molecular medicine, neurosciences and medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, was honored for his research of inherited neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Huntington’s. (Image courtesy of UCSD)

Dr. Chory, a plant biologist at Salk Institute and an adjunct professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego received her honors “for discovering how plants optimize their growth, development, and cellular structure to transform sunlight into chemical energy.”

Researchers at Michigan State University’s entomology department may have found molecular tweaks that can allow Pyrethroid pesticides to kill pests without killing bees.

Washington University, St. Louis: $6 Million in Leukemia Research Funding

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) there are over 380,000 people living with leukemia in the United States. Each year roughly 24,500 people die from the disease and over 62,000 new cases are diagnosed. To improve treatment options for leukemia patients, the NCI recently awarded John DiPersio, MD, PhD of Washington University, St. Louis $6 million in research funding. The Professor of Medicine in Oncology at the university’s School of Medicine will use the seven years of funding to support three major areas of leukemia research in his lab. These include: improving the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy, preventing graft-versus-host disease, and developing new immunotherapies.

Rockefeller U: NIH Research Funding May Lead to “Universal” Flu Vaccine

However, 36,000 American’s die because of the flu virus each year. Now, with the help of millions in NIH research funding, scientists at Rockefeller University have devised a strategy for improving existing flu vaccines. The new vaccines will better protect people against these ever-mutating viruses. And this new strategy might eliminate the need for annual flu shots, while at the same time saving thousands of lives.

$8 M in Research Funding to Expand Stem Cell Trials at UC Davis

UC Davis has a long history of ground breaking stem cell research. Possible therapies studied range from advanced wound healing, treating HIV, and reduced vision loss to the regeneration of bone in otherwise non-healing fractures. Now The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has awarded UC Davis Medical Center scientists nearly $8 million in research funding to launch a special clinical trials program in Sacramento. The goal of the grant is to accelerate the development and delivery of stem cell therapies in human patients.
