According to the NIH, "Genomic medicine is an emerging medical discipline that involves using genomic information about an individual as part of their clinical care (e.g. for diagnostic or therapeutic decision-making) and the health outcomes and policy implications of that clinical use."
In 2018, Duke University was awarded six grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute, a part of the NIH. Two of the grants will total about $9 million over the next 5 years. The first grant establishes the Duke Center for Applied Genomics & Precision Medicine. The second supports a Duke initiative to gather the family medical histories of low-income patients and assess their inherited risk of certain diseases.

With trauma patients just a few minutes delay in treatment can make the difference between life and death. However South Chicago has been without a trauma center since 1991. This means trauma patients have to be transported nearly 10 miles away to receive the specialized services they need. The $270 million makeover happening at the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus seeks to resolve that issue. The new $39 million adult emergency department that opened at U Chicago Medicine in December will become an integrated trauma care facility within the next few months.

UC Davis Medical Center’s Mind Institute was one of five institutes in the nation to win the NIH’s Autism Centers of Excellence Award (ACE). Two researchers in UC San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences were selected as Pew biomedical scholars for 2017. Microbiologist, Rachel Dutton Ph.D. and physicist, Elizabeth Villa, Ph.D. were each awarded flexible funding that may be used at their discretion for personnel, lab equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to their research. Dutton and Villa were selected this as part of this year’s group of 22 exceptional early-career researchers who will receive support for their foundational research.

The University of Chicago is receiving $100 million from Craig Duchossois, his wife, and Janet Duchossois and The Duchossois Family Foundation. The funding will be used to establish a new life science institute that will focus on the development of a “new science of wellness.” As the name indicates, The Duchossois Family Institute: Harnessing the Microbiome and Immunity for Human Health, will work to accelerate research and interventions based on how the human immune system, microbiome and genetics interact to maintain health.

Each year, Duke's Department of Medicine receives more than $130 million in federal research grants to fund basic, clinical, and transnational research. For the fiscal year 2015-2016 Duke University also received over $180 in private donations from individuals and various foundations to support their lifesaving research. An example of their success is a recent study conducted by Duke University researchers that may save patients with atrial fibrillation (A-fib) from suffering from strokes.
