The 225th Anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh will be celebrated this year. One of their most notable accomplishments was contributing to the launch of the "Biotech Industry". Herbert Boyer, a Pitt PhD graduate helped discover how to cut and transfer individual genes within the DNA molecule and transfer them from one organism to another. Boyer eventually founded Genetech, widely considered one of the first successful biotech companies.
With many accomplishments, in 2000, Herbert Boyer and his wife established the Herbert W. and Grace Boyer Chair in molecular biology in the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Biological Sciences. Today the Herbert W. and Grace Boyer Chair in Molecular Biology is used to support an outstanding faculty member in the field of post-genomic molecular biology.

On January 25th of this year we held our 9th semiannual Sacramento BioResearch Product Faire event on the medical campus of the University of California Davis, in Sacramento. The UC Davis Health System includes the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Medical Center with its state-of-the-art teaching hospital. Also part of the Sacramento biomedical hub where we hold our events are the UC Davis Children's Hospital and the Shriner's Hospital for Children of Northern California.

"Marketing" is probably not a word that's used much in university chemistry labs; likewise, lab reagent and equipment suppliers may not consider it a key part of their job to actively promote lab safety practices. But what if marketing lab equipment safety, with all of the flash and attention-holding gimmicks in the sales and advertising arsenal is exactly what is needed to keep (often young) lab workers safe? And who knows more about marketing: business or academia?
