Georgia Research Incites High-Performance Biofuel Solutions

Posted by David Larsen on Fri, Feb 13, 2015

Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biopower

UGA's bioenergy researchers are helping transform the nation's renewable and abundant biomass resources into cost-competitive, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts and biopower that are needed to meet growing energy needs. Almost 30 biobased technologies have been developed at UGA, with many licensed to the marketplace: genetically modified plants for the production of biofuels and biochemicals, methods for quantitative analysis of biomass, genetically engineered microorganisms for the production of a variety of chemicals from plants, and a process to turn woody waste biomass into a liquid fuel.

Two New Emory Research Buildings Are Under Construction

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Thu, Feb 06, 2014

Emory University is undergoing a $52 million expansion project on the Sanford S. Atwood Chemistry Center. The new Emory research building expansion is largely funded by profits from an HIV-AIDS drug discovered by researchers in the building. This large amount of funding at Emory University will ensure that the space is bright, beautiful and also functional. Sunlit foyers and communal spaces will characterize the new building.

Stem Cell Research Market Growing: Emory University Makes Contribution

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Tue, Oct 15, 2013

Researchers at Emory University have discovered a way of packaging stem cells that make them much more effective in heart therapies. Using a capsule made of alginate, a gel-like substance, the researchers package the stem cells and attach them to the heart within a patch. According to Emory University, this capsule cause the stem cells’ healing to take place over time, rather than dying soon after they are introduced to the body, as they do without the capsule.

Life Science Funding News on our Company Blog

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Wed, Sep 25, 2013

In an article on our Science Market Update blog last week, we featured some life science funding news stories that we covered in our Life Science Company and Industry News Briefs blog the week before. We’d like to do the same this week because a number of last week’s funding news stories may be of interest to lab suppliers working to sell lab equipment at these well-funded research institutions. In the following paragraphs, we’ll give a brief summary of what schools received funding, how much funding they received, and what the topic of research is. We’ll also include links for further reading.

UGA Researchers Find Link Between 2 Proteins and Alzheimer’s

Posted by Jennifer Nieuwkerk on Tue, Jul 16, 2013

Science researchers at the University of Georgia, the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta and the Georgia Regents University have discovered a direct relationship between Alzheimer’s disease symptoms and two specific antibodies. The discovery may lead to a much-anticipated diagnostic blood test for the disease. The research team published their findings in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences and found that as two specific proteins’ concentration increases, dementia also increases.
