Texas Medical Center Receives $5.8M in Research Funding for Cancer Bioinformatics

In the information age, cancer research is shifting from data generation to bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary field develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.  The Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) recently awarded W. Jim Zheng, Ph.D., of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) a five-year, $5.8 million grant to sort through information that could lead to cures for cancer.

UAB Biomedical Engineering Dept. Awarded 2 NIH Grants Totaling $4.8M

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded two large grants to University of Alabama researchers. A $2.5 million--four year--grant will support research into heart failure. A second, $2.3--four year--grant with be used to research treatment-resistant high blood pressure.

Washington University, St. Louis: $6 Million in Leukemia Research Funding

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) there are over 380,000 people living with leukemia in the United States. Each year roughly 24,500 people die from the disease and over 62,000 new cases are diagnosed. To improve treatment options for leukemia patients, the NCI recently awarded John DiPersio, MD, PhD of Washington University, St. Louis $6 million in research funding. The Professor of Medicine in Oncology at the university’s School of Medicine will use the seven years of funding to support three major areas of leukemia research in his lab. These include: improving the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy, preventing graft-versus-host disease, and developing new immunotherapies.

$8 M in Research Funding to Expand Stem Cell Trials at UC Davis

UC Davis has a long history of ground breaking stem cell research. Possible therapies studied range from advanced wound healing, treating HIV, and reduced vision loss to the regeneration of bone in otherwise non-healing fractures. Now The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has awarded UC Davis Medical Center scientists nearly $8 million in research funding to launch a special clinical trials program in Sacramento. The goal of the grant is to accelerate the development and delivery of stem cell therapies in human patients.

UC Davis Medical Center Awarded $12M Autism Centers of Excellence Grant

UC Davis Medical Center’s Mind Institute was one of five institutes in the nation to win the NIH’s Autism Centers of Excellence Award (ACE). The $12 million, five year grant, will be used for the creation of the “Center for the Development of Phenotype-based Treatments of Autism Spectrum Disorder.” This new center will take a personalize approach to addressing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) treatment based on a child’s behavioral and biological characteristics. The goal will be to identify and tailor treatments that improve the quality of life for those with ASD.

UAB Center for AIDS Research Committed to Stopping HIV by 2030

According to an article for UAB News, 40% of individuals infected with HIV are not currently receiving antiretroviral therapy, which means their disease is not suppressed. The University of Alabama, Birmingham’s Center for AIDS Research recently partnered with state and local agencies in signing the Paris Declaration to eliminate the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2030. Birmingham is the 13th U.S. city to commit to achieving the Declaration’s goals.

UAB Cancer Research Center: $14.5M in NCI Funding This Year

Last year, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center was awarded a five-year, $29 million grant for the National Cancer Institute. The Cancer Center now receives nearly $6M a year in NCI core funding and will continue to do so through 2021. In addition to this core grant, UAB CCC has received over $8.5M in research funding from the NCI during the first half of 2017. This brings their total NCI funding to $14.5 million.

Washington University, St. Louis Leading Drug Trial for Alzheimer's Prevention

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is leading an international team studying potential treatments to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The team recently added a third medicationin this worldwide clinical trial that is already underway. According to the WU School of Medicine news site, the latest investigational drug “is designed to lower production of amyloid beta, a protein that clumps together into plaques damaging neurons in the brain, leading to memory loss, cognitive problems and confusion.”

Texas Medical Center Pioneers New Brain Cancer Treatment

Researchers at Texas Medical Center’s (TCM) Houston Methodist Hospital have invented a way to overcome chemotherapy drug resistance and destroy the deadliest type of brain tumors without destroying the surrounding tissue. This targeted approach combines a “smart drug” with chemotherapy. In animal models of human brain cancer, this smart drug prolonged life by over six fold.

$2.5M to USF to Study Licensing of Parasites

Malaria and toxoplasmosis are caused by different, yet closely related, apicomplexa parasites.  Efforts to eliminate these diseases have met with only partial success. Now the National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded the University of South Florida (USF) a $2.5 million, five year grant to study a new approach to fighting these diseases by stopping their ability to replicate.
