The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) awarded two scientists at UC San Diego $2 million each for their innovative research. The first award went to Alysson R. Muotri, PhD, professor in the UC San Diego School of Medicine departments of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The funding will support studies of new treatments for Zika. The second award went to Dan Kaufman, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Division of Regenerative Medicine. This funding will support the creation an “off-the-shelf immunotherapy” using NK cells to treat refractory or resistant tumors, such as ovarian cancer.

Rockefeller University received a $25 million gift from the Robertson Foundation that will be used to create the Robertson Therapeutic Development Fund. This fund will be used to help turn basic research discoveries into new medical therapies by providing support for dozens of Rockefeller projects over the next five years. Research grants ranging from $10,000 to $1 million will be awarded from the fund in order to provide Rockefeller scientists with the resources they need to take exceptionally promising research initiatives through the steps that lead to breakthrough medications, new diagnostic tests or other clinical innovations.

The National Institute of Aging has awarded a five year, $10.3 million grant to the University of Arizona, Tucson to fund research on why women are more susceptible to developing Alzheimer's Disease than men are. Lead researcher Dr. Roberta Diaz Brinton will be collaborating with other UA investigators, as well as with researchers at the University of Southern California with specialties including; neuroimaging and informatics, pharmacology, gerontology, and neuroradiology.

The University of Illinois at Chicago received a two-year, $475,000 grant to study a new treatment for type 1 diabetes that might help protect the pancreas. This promising new treatment would involve using two protein molecules to reduce the damage caused by the body’s autoimmune response. The research led by Dr. Bellur S. Prabhaker, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UIC, could eventually free many diabetes patients from the rigors of daily insulin injections.

University of Alabama at Birmingham received a $29 million grant from the National Cancer Institute. This five year core grant will support six research programs at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. The renewal of the Cancer Center Support Grant, the most prestigious federal grant that a cancer research and treatment program can earn, also extends UAB’s elite “comprehensive” designation. According to the UAB News website this designation is awarded for scientific excellence and the ability to integrate diverse research approaches in the fight against cancer.

Two University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers won 2016 Shaw Scientist Awards. This program has supported early research efforts pursuing promising ideas in biochemistry, biological sciences and cancer research for over thirty years. The award given by the Greater Milwaukee foundation includes a $200,000 grant for each recipient to be used as seed money for his or her respective projects. Feyza Engin, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biomolecular Chemistry, is researching type 1 diabetes. Srivatsan Raman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, is conducting research into the properties that allow proteins to change shape.

Cows get pneumonia, or bovine respiratory disease, and it kills more than a million of them each year, making BRD the leading cause of (accidental) death for beef and dairy cattle. That translates to a loss of about $692 Million annually. To combat this loss, the USDA has just invested $9.75 Million in a 5-year project to come up with genomic and management approaches to the BRD problem.
