Research News: UCLA Stem Cell Study Making a Sensation

Most people think of paralysis in terms of not being able to move or walk. But there is another side to being paralyzed , the lack of sensation. The inability to feel pain leaves the person susceptible to burns from inadvertent contact with hot surfaces. Researchers at the Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA have developed a new protocol which could serve as the first step toward stem cell-based therapies to restore sensation in paralyzed people who have lost feeling in parts of their body.

Research News: U of Michigan Spent a Record $1.48 Billion on R & D

According to the National Science Foundation, The University of Michigan (UM) has ranked number one in total research spending among public universities in the United States for the past seven years. Just as impressive, the $1.48 billion spent in 2016/2017 represents a 6.4% increase over the previous finical year. Much of the university's funding came from federal grants.

Research News: Michigan State Saving the Bees from Pesticides

Without pesticides farmers would become nearly impossible to feeding earth’s 7.6 billion inhabitants. However, pesticides can also kills bees and without them agriculture as we know it would collapse. One third of our global food supply is pollinated by bees. Researchers at Michigan State University’s entomology department may have found a way of solving this dilemma. A recent study demonstrates that molecular tweaks can allow Pyrethroid pesticides to kill pests without killing bees.

Research News: University of Georgia Develops New Model for Stroke Studies

According to the CDC, Every 4 minutes, someone in the United States dies of stroke. That’s 140,000 Americans killed by stokes each year. Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability and costs the United States an estimated $34 billion each year.

To help find new treatment options for the nearly 800,000 people who have stokes each year, a team of scientists at The University of Georgia, Athens have developed a new livestock model  that could speed stroke discoveries by providing a better, more predictive transnational model.

Jefferson U: Donations & NIH Funding Yields New Approaches to Treating Cancer

Each year, The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) at Jefferson University Hospital receives approximately $72 million in grants for cancer research from organizations such as Susan Komen for the Cure. This year the SKCC received a $3 million donation from Esperanza and David Neu in order to establish the Neu Center for Supportive Medicine and Cancer Survivorship. The purpose of the Neu Center is to serve as a comprehensive resource for psycho-social care and research.

University of Georgia Receives $1.5 in Research Funding to Develop Brain Glue

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 153 people in the U.S. die from injuries that include a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every day. Currently, there are no effective treatments for moderate-to-severe TBIs. So those who do survive their injuries often live the rest of their lives with impaired thinking, memory, or movement. TBIs can also lead to personality and emotional changes. However, research being conducted at the University of Georgia, Athens (UGA) might lead to a treatment that could significantly improve the prognosis of those with brain injuries. This promising research into a glue-like substance for the brain recently won a $1.5 NIH grant award.

Oregon State Acquires $1.6M Spectroscopy Instrument for Advanced Materials Research

Oregon State University recently acquired a new, customized $1.6 million ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy system (AP-XPS).  The AP-XPS is the first instrument of its kind in the United States to incorporate an ambient-pressure scanning tunneling microscope, or AP-STM, which enables imaging of surfaces with atomic resolution. This high-tech research instrument will make the surface characterization laboratory at OSU’s College of Engineering a major resource for scientists throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Research Funding for University of Georgia Includes Over $37M from NIH

Total research and development expenditures for the University of Georgia, Athens (UGA) reached an all-time high of $458 million. This is a 31% increase in R&D expenditures since the 2013 fiscal year. Over the past three years, externally funded research activities have climbed by 37% to reach $198 million in fiscal 2017. These expenditures are funded in part by federal grants and contracts. For example: in the first seven months of 2017 the University received 96 research project grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH). They total $37.2 million. The rest of their research funding comes from foundations, corporations, as well as the state of Georgia.

University of Utah: $3.7M in Research Funding to Study Cause of Congenital Heart Defects

About 1 in every 100 babies born have a congenital heart defect (CHD), a structural defect of the heart. In fact, CHDs are the most common types of birth defect. In one quarter of the cases the condition is serious enough to require surgery or other procedures within the first year of life. Despite the frequency, the cause of most congenital heart defects remains a mystery. And without knowing the cause, scientists are not been able to find a way of preventing these defects.

Fred Hutch: $7M in Research Funding for Study of Second Primary Breast Cancer

Between 3 to 20 percent of women with breast cancer will develop another primary cancer tumor in the opposite breast within ten years of the first diagnosis. Though previous studies have identified some environmental, genetic, and treatment-related risk factors for contralateral breast cancer, scientists still don’t fully understand what causes these second primary cancers.
