This 2014 FASEB Science Research Conference focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the cystic renal diseases and the development of therapies to slow down their progression.The polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are a group of inherited disorders that result not only in cyst development in the kidney, but also produce a range of extra-renal phenotypic manifestations.
All the PKD related disorders, including ADPKD, ARPKD and nephronophthisis, appear to be linked to defects in primary cilia, and as such they are called ciliopathies. PKD research is presently one of the most exciting areas of renal research. Increased understanding of the cellular basis of disease and the complex signaling pathways altered in cystic tissues has led to a flurry of activity to test possible therapeutic agents in animal models and more recently in human trials. Research is presently ongoing from the most basic to phase III trials and so, as the title of the conference suggests, this disorder truly encompasses all areas from molecular mechanism to therapy.
