This FASEB Science Research Conference focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the role of phosphatases in normal and disease physiology. Reversible protein phosphorylation is a major post-translational modification involved in the regulation of essentially all biological processes. Disturbance of the normal balance between protein kinase and protein phosphatase activity results in aberrant protein phosphorylation, which has been linked to the etiology of several human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and immune dysfunction.
Indeed, a number novel inherited or somatic mutations in phosphatases have recently been described in a wide range of diseases. This FASEB Conference brings together physicians and scientists for presentations, discussion, and collaboration to broaden our understanding of protein phosphatase structure, function and biology and their roles in disease.
New technology as applied to the study of phosphatases will also be highlighted.
Attendees represent a broad range of fields including but not limited to biochemistry, cell biology, structural biology, medicine and therapeutics, and this conference is the major international meeting on phosphatases held in North America.
