Over the past decade the field of cardiac regeneration has witnessed extraordinary advances in both basic knowledge of myocardial biology and clinical applications.Clinical studies have moved from the use of bone marrow-derived cells or skeletal myoblasts to a variety of cell sources including fat-derived stem cells, allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells, and cardiac-resident stem and progenitor cells. Initial results with these novel cell sources are exciting. As a result, the armamentarium of cell therapy for heart disease is rapidly expanding. In addition, cell-free approaches that capitalize on the paracrine effects of cells are attracting growing interest.
The fourth edition of the Lugano Stem Cell Meeting will offer again the opportunity to discuss recent development in the field of cardiac regeneration and heart cell therapy with the most important key opinion-leaders in the field.
The 2014 edition has been made possible thanks to the efforts of many people whose contribution has to be acknowledged. We wish that the fourth edition of the Lugano Stem Cell Meeting will represent a further step towards the creation of a local center of excellence in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.
