Science Researcher Update: Spotlight on Meetings, Conferences, and Events

International Summer School on Organic Molecules: Experiments & Theory Meet at the Surface

Posted on May 21, 2015 5:17:00 AM

Course - Lausanne, Switzerland

The aim of the school is to give students an overview of the exciting field of the study of molecules on surfaces seen from many different points of view. The lectures will range from the study of small organic molecules in ultra high vacuum and at low temperature to experiments performed on biomolecules in liquid, from the synthesis of the molecular units to the theoretical methods that are used to foresee their properties. We will talk about different experimental techniques, such as Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy used in different conditions, synchrotron techniques as X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism, we will discuss the chemistry behind molecular synthesis and we will discover what lies behind Density Functional Theory through lectures and a two-afternoon hands-on tutorial. The question of how to induce chemical reactions on the surface will also be addressed.
The school, which is organized by the two polytechnic schools of Switzerland, EPFL in Lausanne and ETHZ in Zurich is open to Physicists and Chemists with a background that can be both experimental or theoretical.
Students attending all lessons and bringing a poster on a topic relevant to the school will get 2 ECTS.
The fee is 250 chf and covers the cost of lunches and coffee breaks. Accommodation and traveling to Lausanne are not included.
Organization: EPFL
