2013 Life Science R & D Expenditures: 11th Ranked = $646,852,000 [1]

2014 NIH Funding: $486,449,220 [2]

The University of Pennsylvania received more than $815 million in total research awards in the 2013 fiscal year and is consistently ranked as one of the largest recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health. [3]

The University of Pennsylvania received $25 million to establish The Basser Research Center for the treatment and prevention of cancers associated with hereditary BRCA mutations. [4]

The University of Pennsylvania received $20 Million from Novartis where their combined scientists can work on an immunotherapy approach to treating cancers and leukemia. [5]

A new $20 million federal grant will be used to create the University of Pennsylvania Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science that will conduct tobacco related research. [6]

The University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine announced a new biomedical informatics program. The Institute for Biomedical Informatics received funding support from the Smilow Center for Translational Research. [7]

UPenn received a 4-year $12.6 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to analyze whole exome and whole genome sequence data generated from subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and elderly normal controls. [8]

The University of Pennsylvania received a 5-year $11.9 million grant in renewal support for further research at the Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Disease Center of Excellence [9]

University of Pennsylvania awarded $10 Million grant for studying the physics of cancer [10]

The University of Pennsylvania has been awarded $10 million over a 5 year period towards a Single Cell Analysis Program. This will fund three research centers which can work jointly at identifying patterns of gene expression in individual human cells within a variety of tissues such as those of the brain, heart, placenta, and olfactory system. [11]

UPenn received a $9.8 million Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, part of the NIH. [12]

UPenn was awarded a $3.89 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for a project titled "Tobacco Product Messaging in a Complex Communication Environment" [13]

University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine has been awarded a four-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute to conduct breast cancer research. [14]

NIH awarded the University of Pennsylvania $2.4 million over 5 years to study methods of combatting bacterial drug resistance. [15]
