2013 Life Science R & D Expenditures: 13th Ranked = $609,643,000 [1]

2014 NIH Funding: $384,804,131 [2]

UC San Diego received a total of $1.1 billion in research funding for all fields during the 2014 fiscal year. [3]

UC San Diego science programs have been ranked among the best in the nation by the National Research Council, including biomedical engineering, neurosciences, pharmacology and physiology. [4]

UC San Diego broke ground on the $269 million, 350,000 square foot Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute Building in January of 2013, which is expected to be completed in 2016. [5]

UCSD School of Medicine Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology was named a key site in a national, multi-institution, multi-year $41.6 million program to speed drug discovery, development, diagnostics and therapies for patients with autoimmune disorders, primarily rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus erythematosus. [6]

The University of California, San Diego received $20 million, funding over a 5-year term from the National Cancer Institute, in order to continue research focused on understanding the pathology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. [7]

The NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute awarded $12 million to UCSD to create a Center for Accelerated Innovation. [8]

The National Institute for Aging awarded UCSD a $12 million, 3-year grant to study Alzheimer's Disease. The grant begins in 2014 and ends in 2017. [9]

The NIH awarded UCSD researchers a $9.2 million 3-year grant to help modernize and transform how researchers share, use, find and cite biomedical datasets. [10]

Eight UCSD scientists were awarded a total of $8.1 million for stem cell research. [11]

San Diego was recently awarded $7.5 million to the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center expected to open in 2016. [12]

UC San Diego received a grant of $6 million over 5 years to accelerate "metabolomics", an emerging field of biomedical research that offers a path to a wealth of information about a person's nutrition, infection, health, disease status and more. [13]

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a part of the NIH, has renewed a grant for $5.64 million over 5 years to be shared by the University of California San Diego and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Schools of Medicine. This renewal will extend and expand research into acute kidney failure, or acute kidney injury. [14]

U.S. Health and News Report 2014 ranked the UC San Diego Medical Center #1 in the San Diego Metro Area, #5 in California, and is ranked nationally in 11 adult specialties. [15]

UC San Diego Receives $3 Million Grant for Groundbreaking Research in Global Health and Development [16]

Internationally Noted Epidemiologist at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Has Been Named One of Four Inaugural Recipients of the Avenir Award, a Prestigious $1.5 Million Research Grant From the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse [17]

UCSD Scientists Received $3 Million in Grants for Advancing Stem Cell Technology [18]

The J. Craig Venter Institute, located in La Jolla, California, opened in 2013. This new research facility houses departments such as: Genomic Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Microbial and Environmental Genomics, Plant Genomics, Synthetic Biology and Bioenergy, and Platforms in Sequencing. This 45,000 sf sustainable Laboratory facility contains 12,247 square feet of wet labs and computational lab space. [19]

UC San Diego is the 3rd largest employer in the country (26,000 employees) and its faculty and alumni have created 193 new startup companies, including many local biotech firms. [20]
