2012 Life Science R & D Expenditures: 40th Ranked = $295,481,000 [1]

2013 NIH Funding: 73rd Ranked = $74,779,182 [2]

The University of Arizona has been awarded $3.9 million for an international collaboration led by UA ecologists. The research will focus on how microbes release greenhouse gases as they access nutrients in permafrost soils that are thawing under the influence of a warmer climate. [3]

The University of Arizona has been awarded $8 million over four years to research how algae can be grown outdoors all year long. As a means to produce biofuel. [4]

The University of Arizona is part of a consortium sharing a $9 million contract from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to discover new ways of preventing and fighting citrus greening disease. [5]

The Department of Defense announced last week that it would fund a five-year $7.5 million sleep and memory study by researchers at the University of Arizona, UC San Diego, UC Riverside and Harvard Medical School. It’s one of the largest such studies ever conducted. [6]

The University of Arizona recently received a $6 million grant from Fondation Leducq, a French non-profit health research foundation, for an interdisciplinary, collaborative push to better understand how the heart deals with mechanical stress under healthy conditions and in the case of a defect. The University of Arizona is to lead research into origins of cultivated rice and possible improved drought resistant varieties, with funding of $9.9 million from the National Science Foundation. [8]

The University of Arizona received a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the effectiveness of baking soda to help treat breast cancer. [10]

The University of Arizona has been awarded $2 million to study sleep Apnea. [11]

Researcher at the University of Arizona recently received a $1.3 million new life science grant from the National Institutes of Health for a project entitled, "The Cost Effectiveness of School-Based Supervised Asthma Therapy." [12]
