Opportunities Abound in Biotech for PhD Scientists

Posted by Robert Larkin on Fri, Jul 31, 2015

people-219985_1280For many PhD students and recent graduates, one of the hardest decisions to make is whether or not to stay in academia. Striking out on your own into the world after a decade (or more) of education can be daunting, but so can pursuing the tenure track.

In addition to positions in academia, there are myriad opportunities available to PhD holders in consulting, government, finance, law, and biotechnology. A  recruiter looking at a candidate with a PHD sees someone who is able to work independently, think objectively and solve problems.

While many PhD scientists are eager to pursue further research activities in the world of academia, others may choose to join the ranks of rapidly expanding biotechnology marketplace, which raised over $44 billion in 2014.

Salary Expectations for PhDs working in…

  • Research and Development: $75-95K
  • Business Development: $80-110K
  • Regulatory Affairs: $75-85K and an annual bonus of $2.5-10K
  • Medical Science Liaison: $100-170K with an annual bonus of $5-20K
  • Field Application Scientist: $75-95K with an annual bonus of $5-10K

So where can scientists who are interested in privately funded research go to make their mark on the private sector? The answer is…anywhere. Thousands of scientists are hired to perform vital and groundbreaking life science research at leading biotech companies and universities across the nation.

palmsFor instance, out of the roughly 2,500 biotech companies currently operating in the US, San Diego California is home to over 100 of the industry’s most active and influential companies, which collectively employ thousands of PhD scientists and researchers.

Five of  San Diego’s research focused companies often in the local and national spotlight include:

SRI International- an independent, nonprofit research institute conducting client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, foundations, and other organizations.

Genelux Corporation- focused on the research and development of an oncolytic virus based technology for the treatment of cancer.

Acadia Pharmaceuticals- an integrated drug discovery company focused on the identification of novel lead compounds for the treatment of Central Nervous Systems disorders.

Integrated DNA Technologies- a leading supplier of custom oligonucleotide synthesis and a developer of innovative new biotechnologies.

Prometheus Laboratories- involved in the discovery, development, manufacture, and marketing of therapeutics and diagnostics in the areas of gastrointestinal, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

This is just a small sample of the over 100 major players in the San Diego biotechnology industry that regularly make positions available to PhD scientists.

11-sdvsWith so many companies involved in biotech and life science research, San Diego is a wonderful venue for life science events that showcase industry products while promoting collaboration and interaction. That’s why hundreds of the industry’s most hardworking scientists will be attending the 40th Semiannual Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ at UCSD on Thursday, August 20.

In 2014, Biotechnology Vendor Showcase Events at UCSD collectively hosted over 900 of the area’s leading PhD scientists, researchers, and educators. These researchers come to BVS events like this one in search of the latest in lab supplies and equipment, and to:

  • Interact face-to-face with various lab supply companies from around the US
  • Discover emerging technologies and equipment that can be used in your research, at familiar venues in close proximity to your research labs.
  • Save time and money by meeting with several lab suppliers on your own campus. These events are open to all researchers and easily accessible for every member of the lab.
  • Participate a great forum for Q&A about current products, protocols, and resources including: product demonstrations, quality control issues, product quality and price comparisons, and new technologies.
