The National Science Foundation gives awards each year to various scientific organizations across the United States. This year’s NSF research grants account for over $733 million worth of funding and were allotted to a variety of projects and organizations. Since the largest recipients of NSF funding are generally large research universities, it comes as no surprise that California and Massachusetts received the most NSF funding due to their large and vibrant research university systems and prominent private universities.

California received the most funding at over $98 Million, a whopping 13.4% of total research funding from the NSF, and Massachusetts came in second at over $57 million, over 7.9% of total NSF funding.
Within California there are many organizations that received Awards for various new and continuing projects. These projects vary from Geometric and analytic issues of nonlinear equations modeling non-local phenomena at UCLA to Cell-type Specific Strategies for Genome Maintenance at UCSD, and are emblematic of a wide ranging and vibrant research culture at California universities.
The organization that received the most funding in California was the University of California San Diego Scripps Institute of Oceanography receiving over $14 million in funding, 14.6% of the total NSF funding in California.
The University of California Berkeley received the second most funding in the state at with over $9 million dollars worth of awards, 9.5% of California’s total funding.
