The UC Davis Cancer Center was recently recognized as a "comprehensive" center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This is the most prestigious honor that a cancer center can receive and designates the renamed, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center as one of the top cancer research institutions in the country.

In order to receive this new designation the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center had to meet stringent criteria in the areas of clinical, population, and laboratory cancer research, as well as in education and engagement with the community. It is one of only 41 cancer centers in the nation to receive "comprehensive" designation from the NCI.

The Cancer Center's new title represents a recognition of outstanding research and clinical services and could lead to significant funding for the institution. U.S. Representative Doris Matsui, a committed supportive of the UC Davis Cancer Center, said "The National Cancer Institute is responsible for making sure that research dollars are flowing into cancer centers that bring the most robust science and technology to the battle against cancer" and commended the Center on their high "achievement."

The UC Davis Cancer Center has already been awarded large amounts of federal funding, receiving over $108 million in federal cancer research grants.
